Dr. Gustavo F. Tondello, a PhD graduate and instructional support coordinator of Waterloo’s School of Computer Science, as well as co-founder of MotiviUX, presented a paper on the Five Factor Player Traits Model at INTERACT 2019, the IFIP International Conference on Human-Computer Interaction.
A story about the paper was also featured in Cheriton School of Computer Science News, here.
The paper, co-authored by Dr. Lennart Nacke, Gustavo Tondello, Karina Arrambide, Giovanni Ribeiro, and Andrew Cen of the HCI Games Group, introduced five player traits:
- Aesthetic orientation
- Narrative orientation
- Goal orientation
- Social orientation
- Challenge orientation
The researchers created and validated a 25-item measurement scale for the five player traits, which creates a unique profile for players that will ultimately help game makers find and design for their target demographic.
This is the first validated player preferences model [and] it serves as an actionable tool for personalized game design.
