Immersing the Future Innovators: VR Creators Launchpad Workshop

The following news bite was written by Dr. John Muñoz.

The Games Institute (GI) in collaboration with Engineering Outreach recently hosted a collaborative event on March 15th that turned the GI into a vibrant workshop for young virtual reality (VR) enthusiasts. This special occasion called the "VR Creators Launchpad", was designed to inspire the next generation of technology pioneers by introducing them to the fascinating world of immersive technologies. Under the guidance of Dr. John E. Muñoz (Systems Design Engineering) and the Engineering Outreach Facilitators, two enthusiastic groups of children— young makers and technology aficionados—had the unique opportunity to delve deep into the world of VR. This hands-on workshop allowed them to assemble their own VR headsets (DIY wooden headsets) and engage directly with the technology, fostering not only understanding but also sparking their curiosity and imagination.

Experience the Magic of Creation

This initial hands-on experience was both fun and educational, teaching children aged 7-12 about the basics of VR headset assembly and the mechanics behind VR technology by structuring several engaging activities. The first activity started with a brief introduction of key concepts of VR and immersive technologies, ensuring that the science was translated in a comprehensive way for young children to understand them. The young participants then put their new knowledge to practice by assembling VR headsets, created with materials such as eco-friendly wood and biconvex lenses. This VR kit allowed them to understand important concepts of VR such as depth perception, 3Dimnesioness, stereopsis, sensor tracking, and cybersickness while using simple, DIY, and safe materials.

Programming a Rocket Launch in VR

The workshop continued with the introduction of game engines and how they can be used to create games and interactive applications. One of the highlights of the day was programming a virtual rocket launch. Using CoSpaces Edu—a versatile educational platform that incorporates 3D modeling, game design, and programming features—the children were able to create their own 3D environments and simulate a rocket launch. This activity not only demonstrated the power of VR but also encouraged the young creators to think critically and solve problems in a virtual setting.

A Launchpad for Future Innovations

This initiative by the GI and the Engineering Outreach exemplifies the educational potential of VR and its ability to merge entertainment with hands-on learning. The VR Creators Launchpad is a starting point for young minds to explore and develop an interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). By engaging with VR, these young enthusiasts are laying the groundwork for future educational and career paths in technology and innovation. The success of the VR Creators Launchpad workshop underscores the importance of innovative educational tools in nurturing the problem-solvers and innovators of tomorrow.

During the workshop, Dr. John Muñoz highlighted the transformative potential of VR and game design in STEM education. He emphasized, "Virtual Reality isn't just about immersive gaming experiences; it's a powerful educational tool that provides a dynamic platform for interactive learning and complex problem-solving." Dr. Muñoz further elaborated on how VR can make abstract STEM concepts tangible and engaging for students of all ages. By integrating game design elements, these sessions not only captivate young minds but also enhance their analytical and creative thinking skills. Dr. Muñoz’s insights shed light on how VR and game design are crucial in developing a curriculum that is adaptable, interactive, and future-oriented, making STEM subjects more accessible and appealing to the next generation of learners.
