About Rachael

Rachael Cale is a certified Child Life Specialist with a BA in Therapeutic Recreation from the University of Waterloo, and a Post Degree Diploma in Child Life Studies from McMaster University. Rachael is currently working for The Hospital for Sick Children, Child and Family Centred Care department. She aims to help children, teens and families cope with the stress and challenges associated with being sick and in hospital through the hospital's internal television channel The SKOOP. Working from Marnie’s Studio, Rachael coordinates and facilitates live interactive television programs that provide fun and distraction, education, normalization of the hospital environment, and a feeling of community for patients. In addition, In 2021, the Studio launched a new sister YouTube channel called The SKOOP at SickKids (www.youtube.com/theskoop). Rachael is also the recent recipient of the 2021 President's Award at SickKids, for helping to create a seamless child and family experience.

Before her work at SickKids, Rachael worked as a Recreation Therapist at Roger Neilson House, a pediatric palliative care facility. Within this role, Rachael supported children and their families throughout the trajectory of their illness, and after their death. Rachael’s focus at Roger Neilson House was providing children the chance to experience normal childhood experiences, as well as helping to build each child’s legacy. After a child’s death, Rachael worked with siblings both individually and in group settings, supporting them through their grief and bereavement.
