OsteoStrong Effects on Bone Health: A Rapid Scoping Review

"This was my first experience doing secondary research, so I learnt about literature search, screening and data extraction procedures. I learnt how to use databases effectively and became skilled at using review organizers like Covidence. Further, I worked in an interdisciplinary team of researchers and exercise scientists, and realized just how beneficial it was to gain insight from colleagues in a different field.

I wish to become a physician, and this experience of secondary research will be vital to me when I undertake bigger projects in my field."

Applying Machine Learning to Reddit Data to Inform eSports Injury Prevention

“Through this project, I have gained skills in working with Excel and filtering out what is needed efficiently. My future goal is to stay in touch with this project and help out where I can because of my experience with the data."

Does the Fatty Acid Content of Fast-Food Plant-Based Burgers and Meat-Based Burgers Differ?

"Through this experience, I learned invaluable lessons on the scientific process and how research works in the real world. I had the opportunity to develop my analytical, interpersonal, and critical thinking skills, and I have developed life-long connections and relationships.

Moving forward, I am hoping to continue working on this project on the side, and I hope to pursue other research opportunities using my refined knowledge and skills."

Physical Activity Decision-Making

"Throughout this fellowship, I gained very valuable knowledge on integrating and summarizing findings from multiple sources while working on a literature review. I also conducted in-person recruitment and did screening calls with potential participants over the phone.  In addition, I further developed my attention to detail throughout the entirety of this project, particularly while creating the survey on Qualtrics.

I plan to carry the knowledge and skills gained into my honors research project during the fall 2024 and winter 2025 terms, which I will be continuing to work on with Dr. Harris in the exercise psychology lab."

Support for Policies Related to the Sustainability of the Food System and Eating Patterns Among Adults in Five Countries

"This project allowed me the opportunity to apply knowledge gained in my undergraduate degree and pursue my passion for a sustainable food system while learning new skills, including using research software to complete a literature review, creating an analysis plan to share with international researchers, and using statistical software to test evidence-based hypotheses. I had the opportunity to collaborate with other researchers, including nutritionists and a statistician, and shared my work with the research team for feedback. I increased my knowledge about public health nutrition policies and the importance of incorporating social and cultural implications into the design of equitable policies promoting healthy, sustainable food practices.

Moving forward, I plan to apply these lessons in my Master’s research investigating the capacity of upstream interventions, such as more sustainable eating patterns and food environments, to promote human and planetary health."
