Three faculty members have been named recipients of the 2021 Faculty of Health Graduate Mentorship Awards:
- Kim Lopez (Recreation and Leisure Studies) - Emerging Graduate Mentorship Award
- Mark Ferro (School of Public Health Sciences) - Mid-Career Graduate Mentorship Award
- John Hirdes (School of Public Health Sciences) - Senior Mentorship Award
The Faculty’s Graduate Mentorship Award were established in 2020 to acknowledge and reward faculty members who have made a significant impact in the mentorship of graduate students. Originally, two awards were presented – Senior and Emerging Mentorship – but this year, a Mid-Career award was introduced.
Criteria include fostering students’ skills in problem-solving, critical thinking, self-directed learning and communication; commitment to students’ personal and professional development; effective research planning; and providing a supportive environment that stimulates creativity, debate, engagement and progression toward career goals.
A plaque will be established in the Burt Matthews Hall (BMH) foyer with engraved nameplates for the award recipients of the year, including the inaugural recipients last year: Michaela Devries-Aboud (Kinesiology and Health Sciences) and Katie Misener (Recreation and Leisure Studies).
The Faculty of Health Awards Committee would like to thank the approximately 50 graduate students who sent in letters of nomination and support.
