University student wearing red cape ties super hero capes on young visitors.

In November, the University, in partnership with the Waterloo Public Library John M. Harper Branch and the Stork Family YMCA, hosted a day of free family programming developed by Recreation and Leisure Studies students from REC 220 Program Management course.

The second annual event, called Waterloo West Neighbour Fest, encourages local families to come out and make connections in the community through a variety of family-friendly activities. Hundreds of participants enjoyed activities ranging from "Earn Your Super Hero Cape" to learning how to prepare nutritious snacks.

The students were able to apply management principles they’re learning in the classroom by conducting needs assessments, planning, implementing, and evaluating programs in a community setting.
