Matt Vonk and Bronwen Valtchanov

Kinesiology student Matt Vonk and Bronwen Valtchanov of Recreation and Leisure Studies were selected as this year's winners in the 2014 Applied Health Sciences (AHS) 3MT competition.

During the unique competition for research-based masters thesis and doctoral students, competitors have 1 static slide and 3 minutes to explain the breadth and significance of their research to a non-specialist audience.

They joined winners from the other 5 faculties to compete in the University of Waterloo 3MT finals held on March 27, 2014.

Vonk, supervised by Laura Middleton, presented on “The effects of a single session of weight training on mental health.”

Valtchanov, supervised by Diana Parry, discussed the “Critical intersections of gender, race and ethnicity: Leisure constraints, negotiations and resistances of immigrant adolescent girls.”

Vonk won the university finals and was also selected as the People's Choice award winner. He represented the University of Waterloo at the provincial competition in April.

Valtchanov's research has since been celebrated at the Canadian Congress on Leisure for most outstanding paper authored by a student.
