Janette Smith is the Commissioner of Public Works at the Region of Peel. As the Commissioner, Janette is responsible for supporting, building and sustaining the Peel community through services that provide: environmentally sound waste management; clean and sustainable drinking water; the development of infrastructure that supports and plans for the rapidly growing Peel community; and safe, accessible and reliable transportation.
Janette began her leadership role in Public Works in January of 2017 after a twenty-seven year career in Health Services. Within Health Services, Janette held a number of progressive leadership positions including: Commissioner of Health Services, Director of Long Term Care, and Director of Chronic Disease and Injury Prevention.
Janette participates in a number of boards and committees that support Peel’s vison of working collaboratively with partners and key stakeholders in order to achieve the best outcomes for Peel residents. These committees include: the Regional Public Works Commissioners of Ontario, Metrolinx, the Association of Municipalities of Ontario Health Task Force, the Peel/ MTO Liaison committee and the Local Health Integration Network. Janette is a believer that having a strong presence and voice at decision-making tables is key to ensuring that Peel has the support and resources needed to be successful now, and in the future.
