The Faculty of Health teaching fellows are pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for instructors seeking training to improve their teaching knowledge and practice. This funding can be used to cover the price of training and/or attendance at teaching-related conferences and is intended for faculty or staff members who cannot subsidize these activities with other funding sources.
The following criteria must be met by all applicants:
- Applicant must be an instructional staff member, faculty member, or contract/sessional instructor (Please note that contract/sessional instructor applicants will be considered on a case-by-case basis);
- Applicant must be teaching a Faculty of Health, Kinesiology and Health Sciences, Recreation and Leisure Studies, or School of Public Health Sciences undergraduate or graduate course(s) at the University of Waterloo;
- Applicant must not have research grants or other sources of funding exceeding $500 per year that may be used to support conference attendance;
- Applicant must demonstrate that the training is directly related to teaching;
- Upon completion of training, applicants are expected to share their new knowledge with Faculty of Health community via teaching-related events organized by Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows;
- Priority will be given to applicants who have not been previously funded.
Value
The funding follows the University of Waterloo budget cycle, May 1 to April 30. The applicants may claim up to $1000 per year for the Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows’ Instructor Training Fund. All unused funds from a given term will carry-over to the next term.
Scope
Funding should be requested for training or conference attendance that is clearly linked to teaching and pedagogical innovation and is not otherwise supported by research grants, department budgets, experiential teaching funds, the Applied Health Sciences Endowment Fund (AHSEF), or other funding sources.
Process
Step 1: Submit the application proposal to Unit Head
In order to be eligible for funding, you must first have your application approved by your respective Unit Chair/Director.
Step 2: Submit application form to Teaching Fellows
Submit your application online by filling out the Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows’ Instructor Training Fund application.
The Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows will review applications on a case-by-case basis provided there are available funds for the term in which the application is submitted. The applications will be reviewed in the order in which they are received by the Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows.
Step 3: Applicant notification
After review of your application, the Faculty of Health Teaching Fellows will notify you whether your application was funded or not. All unfunded applicants will be provided with a brief explanation as to why their application was not funded. The Teaching Fellows will aim to provide you with feedback within two weeks of having received your application.
Step 4: Payment
Funds in the approved amount will be transferred to an account for your use. You will be advised of the account number and will use a work order for any expenses. Step 5: Giving back to the Faculty of Health community
Upon completion of your teaching-related training, you will be required to present your new knowledge to the Faculty of Health community. You can utilize Faculty of Health Teaching Fellow monthly meet-ups, Teaching Fair, or other events fostering teaching excellence and innovation. Your talk/presentation must be given to Faculty of Health faculty within the same academic year that you attended your training.
