Equity and Inclusive Communities Awards

The Faculty of Mathematics Equity and Inclusive Communities Awards recognizes the outstanding contributions of individuals or groups who have demonstrated a commitment to advancing the Faculty of Mathematics’ Equity and Inclusive Communities (E&IC) Principles. The award celebrates the achievements of those who have challenged systemic barriers and advocated for positive change within the Faculty.

Three awards are presented annually – one to an individual student (undergraduate or graduate student), one to an individual employee (faculty, staff, or post-doctoral fellow), and one to a recognized group or unit within the Faculty of Mathematics.

Nominations for the 2025 Awards are now closed. Nominations for the 2026 Awards will open in the Winter 2026 academic term.

Award Criteria

Nominations are evaluated based on:

Nomination Process

When nominations are being accepted, individuals are asked to submit their nominations via an online form that will collect the following information:

  1. The name and contact information of the person or group being nominated.
  2. A description of how the person or group is linked to the Faculty of Mathematics.
  3. An explanation of why the nominee is being nominated for the award, including the impact of their contributions, and how they align with the Faculty of Mathematics’ E&IC Principles
  4. At least 2 letters of support from individuals affiliated with the University of Waterloo, preferably from the Faculty of Mathematics. The letters of support should be from individuals other than the individual submitting this form.

Important Considerations for Nominators

Based on their experiences adjudicating nominations to date, awards selection committees encourage individuals to consider the following prior to submitting their nominations.

  1. Review the evaluation criteria before completing the nomination form and/or submitting letters of support. Clear alignment with these criteria strengthens the nomination.
  2. Refer to the Faculty of Mathematics' Equity and Inclusive Communities (E&IC) Principles, and explicitly describe how the nominee’s activities advance one or more of these principles. The awards are intended to recognize contributions that promote equity and inclusion, so it is important to clearly articulate the connection between the nominee’s work and the principles.
  3. Reflect on the impact and reach of the nominee’s activities within the Faculty, across the University, and beyond. The E&IC Principles consider a broad range of communities, and one measure of impact is the extent to which the nominee’s work engages multiple communities.
  4. Seek letters of support from a diverse range of stakeholders. Letters from individuals in different roles (e.g., faculty, staff, students) and from various communities can help demonstrate the breadth and significance of the nominee’s contributions..
