In the Faculty of Mathematics, it is important for us to recognize students who have excelled during their academic studies here at the University of Waterloo. Below we have compiled a listing of students who have achieved outstanding academic performance as well as our medal winners for the Alumni Association Gold, Governer General Silver, and the K.D. Fryer Gold awards.
Alumni Gold Medal
University of Waterloo Alumni provide a maximum of six gold medals annually to be awarded in recognition of academic excellence. Each medal will be awarded on the recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty. The medals may be awarded, at either the Spring or Fall Convocation, as follows: one each to a student in each of the six Faculties of the University who has demonstrated outstanding academic performance on completion of an undergraduate degree.
Governor General's Academic Silver Medal
The Governor General of Canada provides three silver medals annually to recognize the undergraduate students who achieve the highest academic standing upon graduation from a Bachelor’s program, with equitable distribution between Faculties. In years in which the medal is not awarded in a given Faculty, the President's Award of Excellence will be awarded to the Faculty's student with the top graduating average.
Graduating Awards of Excellence
A student who demonstrates exceptional academic performance in a degree-granting program may be recommended to graduate with either "Dean's Honours" or "Distinction", based on their final cumulative average.
J. Alan George Faculty of Mathematics Engagement Award
Awarded annually to up to three current undergraduate students on the basis of academic standing (must be ‘good’ or ‘excellent’) and a demonstrated positive impact on the Faculty of Mathematics student experience through extracurricular and/or volunteer involvement (e.g., contributions to strengthen diversity and inclusivity within the faculty, championed teamwork and collaboration that effected positive change, etc.).
K.D. Fryer Gold Medal
The K.D. Fryer Gold Medal is awarded every year at the Fall Convocation ceremony and is presented to a graduating Math student who best exemplifies academic excellence, good student citizenship, and involvement in extra-curricular affairs.
