Digital Lives

ENGL 108D In this course, you’ll explore how social media shapes our communities, how we present ourselves, and how we represent ourselves and others through digital communication. You will have the opportunity to study online and participatory cultures and to reflect on your place and practices within those cultures. This course will include a variety of readings on digital media and communication, analytical writing, and creative, applied projects.

This course may be appropriate for you if one of these statements describes you:

  • I am a frequent user of social media and want to study the way that digital cultures, identities, and movements form, communicate, and change
  • I am resistant to using social media, but want to learn more in order that I may make more informed and effective decisions about when and how to communicate there
  • I am interested in the technical, social, and cultural elements of digital media that permeate my life

This course may be appropriate for you if some of these statements describe how you feel about writing:

  • I am fairly confident about my writing, but would like to continue to focus on improvement, especially in the context of digital media
  • I want to think more carefully about how I represent myself and communicate to more effectively on social media
  • I want an opportunity to bring together my interests in technology with my development as a writer
