Interviewing

SPCOM 225 is a workshop course in how to plan and participate in interviews.  You will learn to ask questions effectively in probing interviews; to lend support to your friends, family members, and associates in counselling interviews; and to explore employer/employee fit in selection interviews.  The course is designed to allow you to learn by participating in interviews as often as possible.  The course also considers interpersonal and institutional power, relationships between yourselves and others in formal interview contexts, and responsibility in communication. 

This course may be appropriate for you if these statements describe you:

  • I am interested in developing my skills as both an interviewer and an interviewee in various types of professional settings.
  • I would like to develop my ability to communicate in formal one-on-one situations.

This course may be appropriate for you if some of these statements describe how you feel about participating in interviews:

  • I am interested in using interviews to gather information but am concerned that I do not know how to do so effectively.
  • I would like to be able to support my friends, family members, and associates more effectively in our shared communication practices.
  • I am concerned that I have no experience and/or expertise in job interviews.
  • I enjoy learning about myself and others as communicators. 

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to…

  • Be able to prepare for interviews for specific purposes and in specific contexts.
  • Exhibit the critical skills required to appraise your own and others’ interviewing behaviours.
