Introduction to Rhetorical Studies

ENGL101 B will introduce you to the study and practice of persuasion, including the history and theory of rhetoric, the structures and strategies of arguments, and the analysis of texts and images. You’ll learn about the theory, history, and principles of rhetoric and have the chance to apply these principles to the analysis of a variety of texts. You’ll learn how to apply rhetorical principles to your own writing as you produce rhetorically effective visual and written projects.

This course may be appropriate for you if one of these statements describes you:

  • I am interested in how persuasion works and would like to learn to be more persuasive in a variety of contexts, including professional ones
  • I want to learn more about how individual and group perspectives are influenced
  • I want to learn to apply my understanding of rhetoric to visual texts like images, charts, and graphs as well as to my written work
