Leadership

SPCOM 227 is a course in the theory and practice of leadership.  You will study the ways in which leadership and communication are connected.  You will reflect on your own leadership and followership assumptions, learn about historical and contemporary theories of leadership, critically examine popular notions of leadership, and improve your own leadership and followership practices.

This course may be appropriate for you if these statements describe you:

  • I am interested in understanding what leadership is and how it works.
  • I would like to enhance my leadership and followership skills.

This course may be appropriate for you if some of these statements describe how you feel about the study of leadership:

  • I am concerned that I have little or no skill or experience as a leader.
  • I feel uncertain in taking on leadership roles.
  • I enjoy working with others and would like to contribute to collaborative activities more effectively as a leader and/or follower.

  • Recognize various approaches to leadership and their purposes, advantages, and disadvantages.
  • Understand leadership and followership from both historical and contemporary perspectives.
  • Act ethically and effectively in leadership and followership roles in interpersonal, group, organizational, and public settings.
