Phonetics for Effective English Pronounciation

EMLS 103R In this course, designed for multilingual students who grew up speaking a language other than English, you will identify your pronunciation challenges and develop skills to improve the comprehensibility of your English in both academic and professional environments. You will focus on individual sounds (vowels and consonants) as well as syllable and sentence stress, rhythm, intonation patterns and compensatory strategies. Instruction and feedback are personalized to your needs.

  • I usually spoke a language other than English when growing up
  • It takes me longer to prepare an English presentation than a presentation in my first language

  • I want to get feedback on how to improve my pronunciation
  • I am not always confident when I speak in my classes, to my professors, or the English speakers
  • Sometimes (not always) I try to avoid speaking in English

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to…

  • develop an individual pronunciation profile to recognize consonant and vowel sound problems, stress, rhythm, and intonation
  • isolate and pronounce vowels and consonants identified in the pronunciation analysis
  • use appropriate intonation patterns, pitch changes, and rhythms for English phrases
  • use the appropriate non-verbal cues of communication that assist pronunciation
  • use strategies to achieve comprehensible pronunciation in  academic and professional contexts
