Error Correction in Academic Writing

EMLS 102R Designed for multilingual students who grew up speaking a language other than English, this course will help you develop your ability to express your ideas effectively in writing. You will become aware of your most troublesome errors and learn strategies for improving punctuation, spelling, vocabulary use, grammar, sentence variety, paragraph format, and organization. Instruction and feedback are personalized to your needs.

This course may be appropriate for you if one of these statements describes you:

  • I usually spoke a language other than English when growing up
  • It takes me longer to read and write in English than in my first language

This course may be appropriate for you if some of these statements describe how you feel about writing:

  • I find writing in English is time-consuming, so I only write in English for school assignments
  • I want to learn more about how to write for university classes
  • When I write in English, I spend time thinking about the grammar and words that will make my meaning clear
  • I would like to learn more about writing effective sentences in English
  • I need help finding and correcting my grammar errors and editing

By the end of this course, successful students will be able to…

  • accurately label grammar and punctuation points
  • recognize and correct errors in their own and others’ sentences and paragraphs
  • use a range of academic vocabulary accurately and appropriately in academic writing
  • identify sentence organization patterns and use them accurately and appropriately
  • write conventional paragraph patterns
  • write paragraphs and essays in various academic genres (narrative,  process, compare-contrast, and argument) under time constraints
