All employees in the Faculty of Mathematics are invited to a celebration for Mark Giesbrecht, our outgoing Dean, whose term concludes at the end of June 2025. The five years he has served as Dean of Math have been nothing if not eventful. One of his first duties as Dean was to help manage the Faculty through the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

In the later years of his tenure, Mark has also managed a difficult fiscal environment, the impacts of geopolitical tensions on research and teaching, and a rapidly shifting technological and research environment – influenced in no small way by the rapid rise of AI.

Along with dealing with so many challenges, Mark has been instrumental in forwarding several strategic initiatives for the Faculty of Math, including planning and breaking ground for the new M4 building.

Through it all, Mark has fostered a culture of excellence and achievement in research, teaching, and service to the University and to the academy more broadly. He has been a calming presence amid so much disruption, and always with a wry smile and sense of humor.
