Vivek Goel, incoming president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, has been named a fellow of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences.

The Fields Institute generally awards fellowships only to mathematicians. The award recognizes Goel’s significant contributions to biostatistics and data analysis and comes on the heels of his 2020 appointment to the Order of Canada.

The announcement of Goel’s fellowship was made at the 2021 Fields Institute annual general meeting, held virtually on June 24.

Goel is a distinguished researcher, physician, and public health specialist. Since the onset of the pandemic, he has been a member of the leadership team for Canada’s COVID19 Immunity Task Force and a scientific advisor for CanCOVID, a national clearinghouse for COVID19-related research. He was the founding president of Public Health Ontario.

Goel takes over as president of Waterloo on July 1, 2021.
