Critical Expression in Canadian Academic Contexts

EMLS 110R In this course, designed for multilingual students who grew up speaking a language other than English, you will develop your communication skills for university and future-career success. You will consider how Canadian cultural values influence written and spoken communication in university and workplace settings.You will focus on developing coherent ideas, writing academic papers, acknowledging writing sources, presenting formal presentations, and demonstrating critical thinking skills. Instruction and feedback are personalized to your needs.

After successful completion of this course, you will be able to…

  • understand and apply academic ethics: paraphrasing, summarizing, citing sources and referencing
  • distinguish between acceptable/unacceptable approaches to one-on-one and group discussions (with peers and professors)
  • learn interview skills, communication strategies, and effective body language
  • critically evaluate and present various sources of information (e.g. articles) and explain complex ideas/concepts clearly and effectively
  • expand and use academic vocabulary in written and oral communication
