Why did you choose to study at Waterloo?
I chose to come to the University of Waterloo because of the well-known reputation of the Math faculty and the co-op program. The co-op program has given me the opportunity to gain valuable work experience, network and meet new people, pay for my study terms/rent and will hopefully help me land a full-time job after graduation.
The process of Jobmine can be stressing especially if it’s your first one but do not worry, have faith in yourself and you will be able to land a job. It may not be in first round or second but there is always continuous as well (and some very good jobs are offered then)
Which class is your favorite so far?
Being here for 4 years, my favourite course is currently CS436 (Distributed Computer Systems). Many people don’t see me as the tech type but for some reason, learning about the different layers (application, transport, network, link, physical) just fascinated and intrigued me.
What do you aspire to do on your next co-op term?
For my next co-op term (Summer 2016), I wish to obtain a position dealing with information security or networks or just more hands-on experience with technology rather than excel.
Has anyone played an influential role in your life during your time at Waterloo?
Throughout my University life, I have especially one friend who has influenced and motivated me to well in school and life. He taught me how to be more financially cautious with my savings, investments and spending. He motivated me to eat healthy and workout everyday with him (workout buddies!). And most importantly, his passion for math inspires me to find my passion and apply the concepts everywhere. I remember when we were bussing back home from grocery shopping and we past by trees and all I remember him saying was something like “lets calculate the distribution….”
Advice for first-year students
GET INVOLVED!! Join clubs, volunteer for campus events, attend events, do recreational or competitive sports and say 'hi' to that soon-to-be-friend you're sitting beside in class. Yes..University is a place to get education but you should also have some time to take a break(and eat a kitkat)! In 20 years, you want to look back at these fun and hardworking memories and be proud that you're a Waterloo Warrior Alumni.
