Market
In this episode of TVO’s The Agenda, host Steve Paikin interviewed a panel including the School of Planning’s own Martine August. The panelists discussed the ‘financialization’ of housing, in advance of the Canadian broadcast premiere of PUSH, a film by director Frederick Gertten that explores the global housing affordability crisis. Martine August shares insights into how finance capital is reshaping housing and affordability in Canada and around the globe. She describes apartment housing is being consolidated in the hands of large financial vehicles, and argues that investor profits are based on tenant displacement and dispossession. In addition, August argues for government intervention in building high-quality social housing.
