As first-year students in our 1B term, all with diverse backgrounds and experiences, we came together to take on the Schulich Accounting Society (SAS) Pathways Case Competition.

The Women in Finance (WIF): A Journey in Finance Conference was held on Wednesday, February 22 in downtown Toronto. During the conference, we had the opportunity to visit and tour the offices of George Weston Limited, TD Bank (Capital Markets), Inovia Capital and Healthcare of Ontario Pension Plan. Below we share some excerpts from our networking sessions with the professionals from these firms.

As someone who hails from an Asian country, I am highly intrigued by cross-cultural business practices in the Asia-Pacific region. I have always been fascinated by the similarities in cultures and business etiquette across Asian countries, and I believe that these similarities can be leveraged by companies to expand their operations across different Asian markets.

The School of Accounting and Finance (SAF) caught up with Andres Perez-Vilarino (MAcc ’19) to discuss his career post-graduation, and to learn how he has leveraged his education and passions to help inform his role.

Hi SAF,

We are the corporate relations team for the Spring 2023 International Study Trip to Vietnam! Our team is tasked with contacting businesses and companies in Vietnam to set up meetings with them when we visit Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.

Our team consists of Raphael, Tony, Quang, and Harshil. We are stoked to be travelling to Vietnam and are looking forward to sharing our exciting meetings and experiences with you!

Hello everyone! We’re the meals and logistics team for the Spring 2023 International Study Course trip to Vietnam! Our team has four members, consisting of Emily, Jacob, Rebekah, and Donald. As the meals and logistics team, our responsibilities are to arrange accommodations and transportation, and to plan out our trip’s schedule to make sure that everything goes smoothly as we explore Vietnam.

What skills have you been learning through being a part of the International Study Course trip?

As a team, we have a wide range of responsibilities, such as creating engaging social media content, planning weekend excursions, diving deep into Vietnamese culture and customs, and — most importantly — taking you along for the ride through entertaining updates on social media!

Wenqian Hu’s paper Trust Versus Rewards: Revisiting Managerial Discretion in Incomplete Contracts was awarded the Lazaridis Institute Prize for the best paper on accounting issues relevant to technology firms. The paper finds that an algorithm-generated bonus allocation scheme improves employee productivity, compared with human managers’ bonus allocation.

In fast-paced and often rapidly changing work environments, employers continue to seek new and improved ways to recognize employees in the workplace. However, new research from the University of Waterloo suggests that public peer recognition may backfire by enabling comparisons among employees, and these comparisons may make some employees feel unfairly treated.
