Quantum Perspectives: Computing

quantum perspectives: computing poster

Quantum computing promises to dramatically alter how we solve many computational problems by controlling information encoded in quantum bits. With potential applications in optimization, materials science, chemistry, and more, building functional quantum computers is one of the most exciting challenges in research today. To build and use these devices, we need to precisely control quantum bits in the lab, understand the ability and limitations of quantum algorithms, and find new methods to correct for decoherence and other quantum errors.

PhysiX: Girls Matter 2022

Girls investigating density of liquids

The Department of Physics and Astronomy is hosting students in Grades 7 and 8 on campus in-person on November 26th for free hands-on activity workshops, inspiring talks, and a panel discussion, to encourage and engage female and non-binary students to explore physics. This event is free, and participants are expected to stay for the whole event. Registration is now closed for the 2022 event.

Perseids Sky-watching Party and Astronomy Lecture

Night sky and telescope on grass.

Explore the night sky with astronomers from the Faculty of Science and Royal Astronomical Society of Canada. The Perseids meteor shower will be at its most spectacular, so let's gather to learn something and then enjoy the view! We will meet first at 7:30pm in the nearby Optometry building for a short lecture by the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics' Dr. Roan Haggar: "Meet the cosmic neighbours: planets, comets, and aliens?"

WCA-KPL Public Talk - The Science of Solar Eclipses (Roan Haggar)

On April 8, Southern Ontario will witness a total solar eclipse for the first time in nearly 100 years, as the Moon blocks out the light of the Sun for several minutes. Total eclipses are an amazing spectacle but have also played a key role throughout history in our understanding of science. At this month's KPL astronomy talk, Dr. Roan Haggar will speak about the upcoming solar eclipse, and what eclipses have taught us about the Sun, our Solar System, and the Universe.
