The recipients of the 2019 Amit and Meena Chakma Awards for Exceptional Teaching by a Student were announced today by Associate Vice-President, Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs Jeff Casello. Two Science graduate students were among the four winners.
Every year one co-op student from each faculty is recognized by the University of Waterloo for their contribution to their employer, community and the further development of experiential education. The 2018 Faculty of Science Co-op Student of the Year is Stephanie Chan (Biochemistry). Astronomy and Physics student Emily Pass received the 2018 Co-op Honourable Mention.
Today, the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology (CBB) announced the recipients of their seed funding competition. A total of ten Waterloo professors were listed, including four researchers from the Faculty of Science. This is the second round of funding awarded under the program, which debuted last year.
Today, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced more than $39 million for state-of-the-art research labs and equipment through the John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF). This investment will support 251 researchers leading 186 projects at 43 universities across Canada, including three Waterloo chemists.

“You are biased. And so am I,” was the message that started off the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) seminar last week. Bias in science and academia is now being recognized as a prevalent problem, influencing hiring practices, attrition rates, and collaborations.
Ontario is recognizing five leading researchers for their contributions to the fields of chemistry, physiology or medicine, physics and economic science and Waterloo Chemistry alumnus Aron Broom (BSc. '07, MSc. '10, Ph.D. '16) was one of the recipients.
