Scam Alert - Scam targeting international students

Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has released a scam notice reporting that international students have been recently receiving phone calls from individuals claiming to be IRCC employees. The caller tells the student that to avoid arrest and deportation, they must obtain an immigration lawyer. In some cases, students have transferred large sums of money under the false belief that they are obtaining an immigration lawyer. As far as we know Waterloo students have not been targeted but, we encourage students to be aware.

Holiday campus closure

The University will be closed for the holiday break. Campus police will start locking doors at 4:30 p.m. on Friday, December 22 and will reopen them for 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday January 2, 2018. Classes begin on Wednesday, January 3, 2018.

Campus mourns loss of student

Jonathan Campbell Bennett, a fourth-year Architecture student was fatally hit by a car while riding his bicycle in Rome on November 21.

"Our hearts go out to Jonathan’s family, and the University is doing everything it can to support them at this time. Students, staff and faculty in Architecture have all been informed of Jonathan’s untimely passing," said Anne Bordeleau, Director of Waterloo's School of Architecture.

Scam Alert - Kidnapping scam targeting Chinese students in Canada

Media outlets, as well as Toronto and Hamilton Police Services, are warning Chinese students in Canada about a recent scam. Victims of this scam have been found safe and, as far as we know, Waterloo students have not been targeted. However, we encourage students to be aware.
