On December 7, 2023, Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) introduced a number of policy updates that directly impact international students.
Starting January 1, 2024, a single new study permit applicant is required to show proof of funds of $20,635 in liquid funds to study in Canada.
This is an increase from the previous $10,000 requirement to meet updates on the low-income cut-off (LICO).
In addition, the applicant is required to show sufficient liquid funds to cover the first year of tuition fees as well as travel costs.
If you have a study permit with an authorization to work off-campus that was issued by December 7, 2023, then you may work over 20 hours per week for an off-campus employer up until April 30, 2024.
If you applied for a new study permit or a study permit extension by December 7, 2023 and it is approved later, then you will also benefit from this temporary policy.
If you are completing a degree program through online studies and you started your degree after September 1, 2022, then:
you are required to complete at least 50% of your program of study in Canada to be eligible for a PGWP, and
your online terms will count towards PGWP length.
This temporary policy will end on September 1, 2024.
Please note that there were additional measures in place for students who were enrolled in a degree program in March 2020 or who started a degree program between March 2020 and August 31, 2022. Students who fall under this criteria and are still studying should refer to the Full facilitation measures under the Distance Learning section for updates.
IRCC had provided several opportunities for PGWP holders to extend their permits for an additional 18 months. After the current policy expires on December 31, 2023, no further extension opportunities will be offered.
