Special measures for Haitian temporary residents in Canada

Tuesday, May 28, 2024

On May 23, 2024, IRCC announced new immigration measures to support Haitian nationals already in Canada. These measures have been put in place due the volatile security situation in Haiti.

Beginning on May 23, 2024, Haitians with a valid temporary resident status in Canada are able to apply for a study permit, open work permit or status extension at no cost. Like other such IRCC temporary measures, applicants also have the option to apply for and receive an additional open work permit if they already hold a valid study permit (or vice versa).

Applicants that meet the criteria of these special measures are not required to pay application fees or biometrics fees.

These measures will be in place from May 23, 2024, to November 19, 2024. There are also additional measures in place for Haitian family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.

To view the entirety of the measures on offer or to get specific instructions on how to apply, please visit IRCC’s dedicated webpage.
