Government of Canada announces temporary negative COVID-19 test requirement for travellers arriving from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong or Macao

Thursday, January 5, 2023

Starting January 5, 2023, all travellers arriving to Canada from the People’s Republic of China, Hong Kong or Macao must provide a negative COVID-19 test result to their airline prior to boarding, regardless of nationality and vaccination status.

Test results will be accepted if travelers:

  • Provide negative molecular (such as a PCR test), or a negative antigen test that has documentation to show that it has been monitored by a telehealth service or an accredited laboratory or testing provider.
  • Take the test no more than two days before departure.

Students that test positive for COVID-19 more than 10 days before their departure flight, but no more than 90 days, can provide their airline with documentation of their prior positive.

To ensure a safe and easy journey back to Canada, it’s important to check current travel policies. If you have concerns that this new requirement may delay the start of your term, please review the list of important dates for undergraduate and graduate students and email your academic advisor or graduate coordinator.
