Sexism Response Workshop

The Math Faculty HeforShe and the Math GSA are co-hosting a sexism response workshop on Feb 1st, 11:30 am - 1:00 pm, in MC 5479. This is a great opportunity as we are creating a forum to discussion gender equity issues. Through some fun activities,  you will learn to recognize a situation where sexism exists, and to respond to the situation in an appropriate way. This also gives you the chance to connect with like-minded people, as we aim to create a more inclusive environment for ourselves and our students in the long run.

2018 Hagey Lecture: Weapons of Math Destruction

Hagey Lecture looks at the dark side of Big Data

We live in the age of the algorithm. In theory, this should lead to greater fairness: Everyone is judged according to the same rules, and bias is eliminated. But as mathematician and author Cathy O’Neil reveals, the opposite is true. The models being used today are opaque, unregulated, and uncontestable, even when they’re wrong. Models are propping up the lucky and punishing the downtrodden, creating a “toxic cocktail for democracy.”

Welcome to the dark side of Big Data.
