Equity survey to reopen; race-based salary anomaly review to begin soon

Tuesday, May 24, 2022

FAUW is pleased to announce that the University's equity data collection for regular faculty will reopen soon. These data will be used to complete the important work of investigating race-based salary anomalies for faculty members.

Context

In the 2021 compensation negotiations, FAUW and the administration agreed to a process that would provide:

"… raw disaggregated data on race and Indigeneity to the Salary Anomaly Working Group, who will use it to update the results of the 2021 Salary Anomaly Review to identify any race-based anomalies. If race-based anomalies are identified, they will be resolved and compensation will be retroactive to May 1, 2021."

Due to delays in data collection, this process was halted. Now, through the efforts of the FAUW board and of several individuals—Bryan Tolson, FAUW chief negotiator for compensation, Nancy Worth, FAUW representative on the Equity Data Advisory group; and FAUW president Lori Curtis, who brought this item to the attention of Senate on April 18, 2022—the process has resumed.

Data collection will resume shortly, be open for a month and then the anomaly review will begin as per the 2021 salary negotiations. Once the review is completed, compensation will be corrected retroactive to May 1, 2021.

Confidentiality

Faculty members can rest assured that data collected, which are housed on Canadian servers, will remain confidential.

Participation

Racialized and Indigenous faculty are especially urged to participate in order to have their information recorded and any salary anomalies rectified.

Non-racialized and non-Indigenous faculty are urged to participate in order to ensure that the data is as robust as possible and to show support for and solidarity with Racialized and Indigenous faculty.

Assistant professors are also especially urged to respond since their initial participation rate was low and salary anomalies early in career can be impactful.

How to participate

The survey only takes about 5 minutes and can be accessed securely through an alert in Workday. Please submit your responses as soon as you can after the announcements come out.

We understand many faculty members find Workday difficult to use. If you have any questions or would like to request a paper copy of the survey, please send an email to equitysurvey@uwaterloo.ca.

We ask all members to please complete the survey and help support this important FAUW initiative.
