Dr. Neil Randall, GI Executive Director and Chair of the Ethics, Technology and Social Impact (ETSI) Council, is a panelist for the upcoming event "Wo(man) and machine - who makes the decisions and why?". Women in Communications and Technology (WCT) is running this panel event to bring together perspectives on ethics and artificial intelligence. 

Lindsay Meaning, English PhD student studying game adaptations of literary texts and settler colonialism and imperial ideologies in single player Role-Playing Games (RPGs), presented at the Popular Culture Association (PCA) 2019 National Conference, April 17-20.

Sophie Kenny, GI alum and staff scientist at Vpixx Technologies Inc., recently presented at the 2019 Canadian Society for Brain, Behaviour and Cognitive Science (CSBBCS) Conference that took place June 7-9 at the University of Waterloo.

John Muñoz, GI member and Postdoctoral Research Fellow with the Intelligent Technologies for Wellness and Independent Living (ITWIL) Lab, showcased the VR Exergames project at the "Curiosity Fair" organized by the Research Institute of Aging and hosted at the Village at University Gates on May 31. 

Justin Carpenter, GI member and English PhD candidate, was featured in the Graduate Studies and Postdoctoral Affairs blog this week recapping his GRADtalk from May 2017.

Last year, Carpenter was a co-speaker (alongside Audrey Chung, Systems Design Engineering PhD student) at "Beyond 60: The Promises and Realities of Artificial Intelligence" where he shared insights about AI driven by his unique research perspective.

Gada Jane, Creative Director of Velvet Icons Productions and Research Associate at the GI, will be leading an iLunch session for Interactive Ontario called "Positioning Within the Global VR Industry" on May 28. She will discuss diverse approaches to creating, funding, and distributing Virtual Reality (VR) content worldwide.

John Harris successfully defended his Computer Science PhD thesis on April 30th, 2019 - the Games Institute would like to extend a loud and proud congratulations to Dr. Harris!

April 12, UW's English Department hosted the Tri-University Graduate Symposium (TUGS) for English graduate students.

GI member John Harris won third place, with a $5,000 grant, at the Velocity Graduate Student Fund finals for his pitch to develop his enterprise, The Playful Pixel. Harris is a PhD student in Computer Science studying asymmetric games as a means of promoting inclusiveness and getting more kinds of people playing together.
