This checklist is designed to help you organize your progress through your program. The following tasks are your responsibility. 


1. Register ACTIVE every term (Fall, Winter, and Spring). Inactive registration is exceptional. If you do request INACTIVE status, you must seek approval from your advisor, the Associate Director, Graduate Studies, and the Associate Dean, Graduate Studies. Requests for inactive status will not always be approved.

If you fail to register for any term, you are automatically withdrawn from your program. Readmission is not guaranteed, and if granted, requires payment of fees for the term(s) you dropped out.  If you are readmitted, you will be required to register for a minimum of one term without a tuition refund.

2. Should your supervisor change at any time during your program, it is your responsibility to complete a Change of Supervisor (PDF) form and submit to the Faculty Graduate Studies Coordinator after signatures have been obtained.

3. Compulsory requirement HLTH 601. Complete two of the four required methods HLTH 606A, HLTH605A, HLTH 625 or HLTH 619. You will be automatically enrolled in MSc Graduate Seminar Milestone A&B in Fall & Winter term.

4. Complete additional graduate courses (required minimum number of courses is five (HLTH 601, two 600 level methods courses, and two electives, including required courses noted above). You are also required to complete MSc Graduate Seminar Milestone A & B offered in Fall and Winter terms.

You will be able to select from courses within the School (including “Practicum” and “Selected Topics” courses, and graduate courses offered by other departments).

Permission may also be requested to include graduate courses offered by other universities.

5. Start preparation for MSc thesis.

6. Prepare a thesis proposal in close consultation with your supervisor. Several drafts and much rewriting are to be expected. You may wish to consult members of your advisory committee.

7. Obtain and submit a copy of the "MSc Thesis Proposal- Notification form (PDF found on the SPHHS Research Grad Community group on LEARN)" form to the SPHS Graduate Coordinator at least three weeks prior to the proposal. The document can be found on the SPHS Research Grad Community group on LEARN.

8. Pass proposal defence.

9. Make any necessary modifications of proposal.

10. Obtain approval for thesis research from the Office of Research Ethics, if appropriate.

11. Conduct thesis research and write up results in close consultation with your supervisor. Several drafts and rewriting are to be expected.

12. Schedule your final defence at least one month in advance.

  • Arrange a time and date acceptable to your committee and inform the SPHS Graduate Coordinator.
  • Be sure to book a room with the Dean's office assistant (front desk).
  • Your final thesis must be on display at least two weeks before the defence.
  • Obtain and submit a copy of the "MSc Thesis Defence Notification Form" (PDF found on the SPHS Research Grad Community Group on LEARN) to the SPHS Graduate Coordinator at minimum two weeks prior to the defence. 
  • Distribute bound copies of your thesis to the committee and the Faculty Graduate Studies Administrator.
  • The Faculty Graduate Studies Administrator will distribute the notice (when informed by you of date, time, etc.).

13. Pass final defence.

15. SPHS Graduate Coordinator will send you your MSc Thesis Examination/Acceptance Report for necessary signatures. Upload you thesis to UWSpace. Formatting your thesis to UWSpace requirements often takes more time than expected.
