The Queer Film Series (QFS) is a monthly screening coordinated by the Mathematics Equity Office. QFS strives to build community amongst 2SLGBTIA+ faculty, staff, and students (and their allies!) through the critical exploration of diverse queer experiences portrayed in films. The QFS series offers an inclusive environment to discuss these experiences, challenge stereotypes and misconceptions, and appreciate the many facets of queer culture. Past participants have expressed appreciation for the opportunity to come together, celebrate diverse stories, and engage in an educational experience that explores the nuances of gender and sexuality.
For this month's screening folks will be watching Pariah. Reviewers describe Pariah as a powerful coming-of-age story about Alike, a Brooklyn teenager, as she navigates her identity while balancing family expectations and personal expression. Through Alike's journey, Pariah highlights the intersectionality of race, gender, and sexual identity, offering a nuanced portrayal of the struggles and triumphs that come with embracing one's true self
Each monthly screening opens with a short background and context about the film. After the screening, attendees are welcome to stay, reflect and engage in a discussion of the film’s contributions to queer culture and/or how the film connects with their own personal experience.
