Congratulations to Anita Layton, professor of applied mathematics and computer science, who has been named a University Professor.

The University Professor designation recognizes “exceptional scholarly achievement and international pre-eminence.” No more than two University Professors are named each year.

“Professor Layton is a world-renowned researcher in the area of mathematical medicine and a leading champion of interdisciplinary research across faculty boundaries at the university,” said Hans De Sterck, chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics. “Her groundbreaking studies have advanced many aspects of mathematical physiology including basic kidney function, sex differences, blood pressure regulation, diabetes, and kidney and heart diseases. The prestigious University Professor designation is a well-deserved recognition for the tremendous research impact Professor Layton has had throughout her career.”

In addition to the University Professor designation, Layton is the Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematical Biology and Medicine. She has received numerous awards in recognition of her transformation research, which uses computational modeling tools to better understand health and disease.

“I’m honored to join this rather exclusive club!” Layton says. “I’d like to thank my hardworking and talented graduate students and postdocs who have been the engine behind our research group’s scientific achievements. I’m also grateful to my good friend Nandita Basu who put together my nomination, and my chair Hans and Dean Mark Giesbrecht who supported the nomination.”

Layton joins only sixteen other University Professors active across the university, including four others in the Faculty of Mathematics: Raouf Boutaba (School of Computer Science); Richard Cook (Statistics and Actuarial Science); Tamer Özsu (School of Computer Science); and Cameron Stewart (Pure Mathematics).
