From the Canadian Math Society

OTTAWA, ON   - The Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS) is pleased to announce the members of Canada’s first-ever team to compete in the European Girls’ Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) in Florence, Italy, April 9-15, 2018. EGMO Math Team Canada is:

  • Anna Krokhine
  • Jingzhi Liang
  • Elnaz Hessami Pilehrood
  • Karen Situ

The team is led by CMS Mathematical Competitions Chair, Professor Dorette Pronk (Dalhousie) and Deputy Leader Sarah Sun (TD) who served as Deputy Leader for Math Team Canada 2017 in Rio de Janeiro.

Each student competes individually to solve six questions, in a competition lasting two days, four and a half hours each day. The students were chosen largely based on the results of the 2017 Canadian Open Mathematics Challenge written in November.

Team Leader Dorette Pronk is delighted that Canada is participating at the 2018 EGMO.

“Girls across the country will be encouraged to develop their mathematical abilities and problem solving skills: We believe that they will succeed a shine in an international contest of the highest calibre.”

Pronk is excited at their prospects.

“I am excited about their commitment to train their problem solving skills and learn new techniques in preparation for an exciting challenge and a unique opportunity to connect with other girls who are passionate about and excel in mathematics. Our female mathletes are doing all they can to be ready!”
