The fall semester's edition of the Concept $5K startup challenge is underway, with four entrepreneurial teams linked to the Faculty of Mathematics in the semi-finals.
The Concept $5K startup challenge is an initiative of the Velocity incubator and provides a platform for students to pitch ventures or products. Students in mathematics and computer science programs are a mainstay in the bi-annual competition, with math-linked teams having been named among the winners in the previous edition.
The contest starts out with hundreds of teams applying to take part, and then a semi-finals round with about a dozen teams pitching to a panel of industry-expert judges. Along with the prize money to further entrepreneurial efforts, the award is widely seen as a major public relations boost for winning teams.
Math-linked teams in this edition of the Concept $5K challenge include:
- AfterSell: AfterSell helps eCommerce merchants boost their revenue by creating a better post-purchase experience.
- SethSquash: SethSquash is a digital sport training platform to allow squash players and coaches to leverage data analytics to provide more insightful feedback for their game.
- Salesboost: Salesboost is a Shopify App that allows merchants to add one-click post-purchase upselling functionality to their store to increase their average order value.
- Garson: Cloud solution that lets restaurant customers explore dishes/restaurants, make reservations, order and pay using QR codes while letting restaurants target customers, run analytics, manage operations and inventory.
Stay tuned to this space for updates as the contest unfolds. Semi-final pitches are set to take place on November 10 and 11. Check out more details and register to attend on the Concept $5K website.
