Headshot of Enamul Haque

Enamul Haque’s curiosity and creativity has taken him a long way: not only from his home of Bangladesh to Canada, but also beyond the classroom to a wide array of hobbies and side projects.

Next Spring, Haque is graduating with his PhD from the Cheriton School of Computer Science. As a member of the Data Systems research group, he works on using AI to bridge “gaps between disparate data worlds.” He is equally passionate, however, about bridging gaps between disciplines such as writing, art and data science.

A published sci-fi author, cartoonist and photographer, he enjoys bringing an artistic approach to his mentoring and teaching work. “Data engineering isn’t just about pipelines; it’s about storytelling,” he says.

Haque earned his undergraduate degree in Computer Science and Engineering from Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology in Bangladesh, as well as completing an MBA at North South University. Before coming to Canada to study AI in a Master’s program at McMaster University, Haque also gained industry experience working as a software engineer at Metatude.

Though he has chosen the life of an academic and self-described “polymath,” Haque insists upon the importance of using his research to help people. He frequently works with NGOs and emphasizes the importance of creating open-source tools that can help make the world more equitable and more efficient.

“Imagine a hospital where patient records, research databases, and IoT devices all sync in real time,” he says. “Or a smart city where traffic, energy, and public safety data converge without manual wrangling. That’s the future we’re building…Data is the infrastructure of tomorrow, and I want to lay the foundations.”
