Jason Bell named Fellow of the Canadian Mathematical Society

Thursday, June 18, 2026

Congratulations to Dr. Jason Bell, professor of pure mathematics, on being named a Fellow of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). The Fellow distinction recognizes CMS members who have “made excellent contributions to mathematical research, teaching, or exposition, as well as having distinguished themselves in service to Canada’s mathematical community.”

Bell is one of two Faculty of Mathematics member to be named a 2026 Fellow of the CMS. Dr. Yu-Ru Liu, professor of pure mathematics, was also named a CMS Fellow, in recognition of her receipt of the Krieger-Nelson Prize earlier this year.

“I feel honoured to receive this recognition from a community I care deeply about,” Bell says.

Bell works in the areas of algebra, number theory, and dynamical systems. “A common theme in much of my work is looking at how ideas from different areas of mathematics and theoretical computer science can be connected in unexpected ways,” he explains.

Bell has been part of the Faculty of Mathematics since 2013. “I enjoy how collegial the Department of Pure Mathematics is, and how strong the students are here,” he says. “I’ve been fortunate to have many colleagues and students at Waterloo, and especially wish to acknowledge the faculty here with whom I’ve been able to collaborate: Stanley Burris, Jeffrey Shallit, Rahim Moosa, Kevin Hare, Rowan Yeats, Matthew Satriano, Blake Madill, Bruce Richmond, Tyrone Ghaswala, and Kathryn Hare.”
