Congratulations to Dr. Rahim Moosa, professor of Pure Mathematics and Math Faculty Research Chair, who has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Mathematical Society (CMS). The honour is given to members who “have made excellent contributions to mathematical research, teaching, or exposition; as well as having distinguished themselves in service to Canada’s mathematical community.”

“It is very gratifying to be recognized by the Canadian mathematical community in this way,” Moosa says. “I would like to thank Brian Forrest for initiating my nomination, Jason Bell for helping put it together, and my chair David McKinnon for his continuous support. I am grateful for their confidence in me.”

Moosa has been a professor at the University of Waterloo since 2004. His research focuses on applying tools from mathematical logic to solve problems in other areas of mathematics, particularly algebra and geometry.

“Rahim Moosa is a fantastic scholar and citizen, and has contributed to the world of mathematics at every level,” says David McKinnon, professor and chair of the Department of Pure Mathematics. “It’s extremely gratifying to see his contributions recognized by the CMS in this way.”

“In Pure Math we have first-rate undergraduate students, a growing and vibrant graduate program, and world-class mathematicians,” Moosa says. “All this, with a collegial and down-to-earth culture across the Faculty; not something one should take for granted.”
