Thanks to generous alumni donors, scholarships have been established and awarded to female graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics.

The recipients of the Cotton Family Women in Mathematics Graduate Scholarship for 2014 are Wunjun Zhu from the Department of Statistics & Actuarial Science and Hangmeng (Harmony) Zhan from Combinatorics and Optimization. This scholarship is awarded annually to a full-time, female graduate student based on academic excellence in her studies and/or research. This award is made possible by a donation from Cathy Cotton (nee Albers) (BMath ’71, MMath ‘74) and Paul Cotton (BMath ’71, MMath ’74) to assist female scholars in their pursuit of advanced degrees in mathematics.

Applied Mathematics PhD student Sepideh Afshar is the recipient of the Barbara Hayes-Roth Award for Women in Math and Computer Science, which is given annually to a full-time, female graduate student in the Faculty of Mathematics on the basis of academic excellence. This award is made possible by a gift from alumnus David Ash (BMath ’87) in honour of his inspirational PhD supervisor at Stanford University.

The recipient of the Women in Mathematics Graduate Scholarship for 2014 is Marianna Rapoport from Computer Science. This award is given annually to an outstanding female graduate student in either a masters or PhD program in the Faculty of Mathematics at the University of Waterloo.

Congratulations, Wunjun, Harmony, Sepideh and Marianna!
