Aukosh Jagannath and Ruodu Wang, two researchers in the Faculty of Mathematics, have received $160,000 in funding from the Ontario Research Fund-Research Infrastructure as part of more than $10 million in funding for Waterloo researchers announced November 22, 2024.
Jagannath, associate professor of statistics and actuarial science and a Canada Research Chair in Mathematical Foundations of Data Science, received $80,000 of funding for his project. The grant will help to fund research in the “Mathematical Foundations of Data Science” research group, which is studying problems related to trade-offs between statistical and computational power as well as developing a theory to understand why powerful algorithms in modern machine learning work. Specifically, the grant will provide critical computing infrastructure and fund the building of a collaborative lab space to aid in research and training.
“I feel incredibly honoured to receive the support of Ontario and Canada,” Jagannath said. “I’m very thankful to my department and the Math Faculty. I’ve been very fortunate at Waterloo to have such very supportive and helpful colleagues.”
Wang, professor of Statistics and Actuarial Science and a Canada Research Chair in Quantitative Risk Management, received $80,000 of funding for his project. Wang’s proposed research program will improve society’s understanding and mitigation of risks by advancing the theory and quantitative methods for critical risk management challenges in finance, economics and natural science, as well as developing techniques for statistical inference, risk assessment, optimization, economics and dependence modeling.
“I am very happy to receive the fund,” Wang said. “I would like to thank colleagues in the Office of Research and in the Faculty of Mathematics for the valuable help during the application process, and my department members for the supportive environment.”
“When we invest in research, we invest in our province’s future,” said Nolan Quinn, Minister of Colleges and University. “These critical investments will ensure Ontario’s researchers can continue making discoveries that drive key sectors, create good-paying jobs and improve the lives of all Ontarians.”
