Hosted by Adrian Lee, The Globe and Mail presents the ‘City Space’ podcast, addressing key challenges that cities face today. Featuring a range of experts, we gain insight into what does and does not make a city run well, and how urban planners have been working towards making the spaces we live in more affordable, efficient, and sustainable.
The Globe and Mails’ first season of the ‘City Space’ podcast features award-winning placemaker, and the University of Waterloo’s School of Planning Planner in Residence Jay Pitter in episode 1 (Should all Canadian cities be 15-minute cities?). In this episode, the podcast addresses the 15-minute city urban planning concept. That is, neighborhoods designed to ensure that residents are able to access day-to-day amenities in short trips which can be completed via active transportation such as walking or biking. Jay Pitter shares her thoughts on why she believes the 15-minute city concept is crucial and yet absent or ineffective across most of North America.
In episode 5 (How unaffordable rent is pushing out the people our cities need), ‘City Space’ features Martine August a professor in the School of Planning at the University of Waterloo. This episode focuses on the global issue of soaring rental costs in Canadian cities. Dr. August helps listeners understand this phenomenon by explaining the rise in corporate landlordship.
