School of Planning Alum Dr. Samantha Biglieri (PhD, 2019), and faculty member Dr. Jennifer Dean, have been awarded the 2023 PlanON Award for Innovation in Research at OPPI’s Annual Conference earlier this month.
Dr. Biglieri’s doctoral research supervised by Dr. Dean, Fostering Mobility for People Living with Dementia in Suburban Neighborhoods Through Land Use, Urban Design and Wayfinding, explores the ways in which people living with dementia (PLWD) experience their suburban neighbourhoods. The research highlighted how environmental features in suburban areas can largely determine the level of comfort or interaction PLWD may experience within their communities, while also providing easy-to-implement, low-cost recommendations for planners to consider when designing more accessible spaces for PLWD. The research was published in the Journal of Planning Education and Research (Biglieri & Dean, 2022).
