School of Planning Director Mark Seasons Highlights Potential Benefits of Modular Communities in Providing Affordable Housing
As the Canadian housing market continues to provide limited options in affordable housing, a recent trend has been the increased demand for modular or mobile housing as an affordable alternative. While the market for more modular communities has grown, the amount of space allocated to develop them has yet to meet this demand.
School of Planning Director Dr. Mark Seasons recent spoke with CTV News about this phenomenon, stating that “considerable demand could be met by manufactured homes.” However, increasing the supply of these homes could encounter challenges not just from zoning policy, but societal stigma around mobile parks from established neighbourhoods.
Dr. Seasons suggests the solution for meeting this demand may need to come from provincial intervention through the policy statement set out for municipalities to follow.
