Ontario’s provincial government has recently expressed their desire to unilaterally remove bike lanes from cities across Ontario, with any future bike lanes having to be approved directly by the provincial government.
School of Planning PhD Candidate Emma McDougall was recently interviewed on CBC Radio 1’s Day 6 Podcast about the province’s recent stance against bike lanes and shared her thoughts on what factors may be driving this recent “bikelash”.
Emma’s research investigates the impact of emerging transportation systems on surrounding communities, with a particular focus on mobility constraints and the potential for inducing neighborhood change processes, like gentrification.
