The University of Waterloo Planning Alumni of Toronto recently held their 24th annual dinner at the Royal York Hotel in Toronto.
Leading up to the event was an informal luncheon. The luncheon was a rewarding opportunity to hear from top level planners about what is happening in the GTA planning community. This year Jennifer Keesmaat, Chief Planner City of Toronto spoke to the group. Former Premier Mike Harris was in attendance as well.
The Faculty of Environment Alumni Affairs and UWPAT also hosted a Young Alumni Pre-Dinner Social, sponsored by Sorbara group. It featured an interactive “speed networking” event with University of Waterloo Planning Alumni from various sectors and disciplines.
The dinner was 'big' with over 800 guests in attendance; and over 70 staff, faculty and students joining from the University of Waterloo community.
Clarence Woudsma, director for the School of Planning welcomed the crowd with greetings from the University, Faculty and School and concluded his remarks with a Chinese proverb. "... if you want happiness for a lifetime, help others." The advice resonated with those in the room who believe planning is and should be all about helping others.
The Keynote address was delivered by Robert Bell, co-founder of the Intelligent Community Forum. Bell spoke about the opportunities of technology in planning the future of our communities.
