It has been an exciting year in Chemistry, with the department welcoming several new faces to its dynamic team. As we close the year, we are also saying goodbye to some beloved colleagues who are taking on their next challenge: retirement!

Professors Juewen Liu and Linda Nazar in the Department of Chemistry have once again made the annual Highly Cited Researchers™ list from Clarivate.
Dr. Juewen Liu is a newly named Tier 1 Canada Research Chair (CRC) in Biosensors and Bionanotechnology. He and his team are developing DNA-based biosensors for detecting things like heavy metal ions in environmental water and lactate in blood.
Roy’s Tier 1 Canada Research Chair has just been renewed, and he’s looking forward to digging deeper into his team’s most recent discoveries, keeping Waterloo at the top of the quantum field.

Linda Nazar, professor in the Department of Chemistry and Canada Research Chair in Solid State Energy Materials, has been awarded a prestigious Royal Society U.K. Hughes Medal. The highly coveted medal is awarded to an outstanding researcher in the field of energy.
