From space missions to pumpkin explosions, it's safe to say we had a busy term here in the Faculty of Science. Catch some stand-out moments that made Fall 2023 one of a kind!
On November 9, 2023, the Waterloo Wetland Lab held its second annual wetland cleanup near Fischer-Hallman Road and Columbia Street in Waterloo. Armed with gloves and garbage bags, a dedicated group of volunteers sifted through the wetlands, collecting 20 bags full of trash.
After an eight-year term that began in July 2015, Dean of Science, Dr. Bob Lemieux, will be stepping down on June 30.
Throughout his tenure, Lemieux focused on the importance of fundamental science and its cardinal intersection with innovation and social impact. He committed more than $500,000 to establish the Dean’s Teaching Innovation Fund to support teaching and learning initiatives within the Faculty of Science. Lemieux hoped that this investment would transform the undergraduate educational experience in science at the University of Waterloo.
Dark matter and dark energy drive the growth of our Universe, but the true nature of this strange "dark Universe" is still a mystery. The Euclid space mission, launching in July, will provide new insights into the expansion and formation of the universe. Waterloo's Dr. Will Percival is a primary science coordinator for the Euclid mission and gave a public talk at the Kitchener Public Library last week.
Lauren Dayes (Rx2022) spent her final days as a Waterloo Pharmacy student completing her patient care rotations in Mindemoya on Manitoulin Island. During her rotation she worked with a family health team, the community’s local hospital and a community pharmacy.
Biology master's student Joud Abu Farah won the best poster presentation award at the Wastewater Surveillance Conference in Toronto last week. She is developing a wastewater surveillance method for influenza A, B and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
