Researchers from applied mathematics bringing new cancer treatments closer to reality

Researchers in applied mathematics are part of a team developing technologies that use acoustic waves to target and destroy cancerous tumours.

While doctors have used low-intensity ultrasound as a medical imaging tool since the 1950s, experts at the University of Waterloo are using and extending models that help capture how high-intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) can work on a cellular level.

Siv Sivaloganathan, chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics and researcher with the Centre for Math Medicine at the Fields Institute, has been working on math models for HIFU technology for a number of years.

Using mathematical models in computer simulations, he helps to address fundamental problems in HIFU technology without any risk to actual patients.
